Susan Lomshek, a Schwegler Elementary School teacher, was presented the 2019 Special Award for Excellence in Teaching by the Lawrence Schools Foundation at an all-school assembly Wednesday morning. The award, commonly known as the Bobs Award, includes a $10,000 check for the recipient on May 15, 2019.
Lomshek followed both of her parents into the teaching profession; started her career at Schwegler as a student teacher, paraeducator, a substitute teacher, and then a teacher and has taught the same grade in the same classroom for 29 years.
“Susan’s dedication and devotion to her work are unquestionable and second to none,” said Ryan Ellett, Special Education teacher at Schwegler Elementary. “She is inevitably the first teacher in the building every morning. Her students’ academic growth on formative assessments and achievements on summative assessments year after year speaks for itself.”
“Her commitment and nurturing attitude are characteristics that make Susan stand out from other teachers,” said Kristal Wilson, peer and 4th grade teacher at Schwegler Elementary. “She takes time to observe each student individually and finds the best approach for him/her to be successful. Susan encourages her students to take responsibility for their own learning while providing them with guidance and mentoring. The relationships she builds with her students and families continue outside the classroom and last for years.”
More than 22 years ago a group of civic leaders, who share the same first name of Bob, created the award through the Foundation. The benefactors choose to remain anonymous to focus attention on the outstanding educators selected annually to receive the award.
The Bobs Award honors a teacher who “exemplifies extraordinary instruction skills; reflects commitment to quality education and dedication to teaching; focuses on individual student achievement; administers to the whole child, guiding each student to achieve his full potential; and is deemed to be proficient, caring, adaptable, and professional.”
