Foundation Presents $20,000 in Teaching Innovation Grants
Thanks to $20,000 in Teacher Innovation Grants from the Lawrence Schools Foundation, 29 Lawrence teachers will be implementing new projects to enhance the curriculum when they return to school in the fall for the 2006-07 school year. Without the Foundation’s support, many teachers wanting to try unique and timely projects to help students learn particular skills or information often pay for supplies and materials out of their own pockets.
“When the Foundation surveyed teachers a few years ago, teachers said that grant funds to support innovative teaching was a critical need,” said Susan Esau, executive director of the Lawrence Schools Foundation. “The Foundation has since tried to support teachers with some of their unique ideas for improving teaching and learning in the classroom.”
Diane Toplikar and Betty Kline, Free State High School library media specialists, will use their $3,000 Foundation grant to purchase audio books for non-readers who need intensive reading interventions. A $950 grant awarded to Langston Hughes Elementary Teachers Linda Longino, Brenda Hatesohl and Karen Fredrickson will fund the purchase of Lawrence History literature sets to be used to enhance the third-grade social studies program. The Foundation awarded a $500 grant to Lawrence High Librarian Arla Jones and Douglas County Youth Services Teacher Marty Gunn to assist with their efforts to provide books and library services for youth receiving educational support at the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.
A two-page list of 2006 Teacher Innovation Grants is included with this news release.
The Lawrence Schools Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 charitable organization committed to enhancing the education provided to all students by the Lawrence Public Schools.
